Outdoor Adventures

The great outdoors at Kingscourt Prep School

We believe children thrive when their learning is fuelled by a spirit of adventure and this motivates them to become more independent learners back in the classroom.

Our woodland environment is central in supporting this very dynamic approach to learning.

The children experience the vibrant nature of an outdoor environment. They see and feel the change of seasons and the impact of this on the environment around them.

OUTDOOR LEARNING

Outdoor Learning Programme

Outdoor Learning at Kingscourt Prep School is about exploring and experiencing the natural world through practical activities.

The curriculum for our youngest children in Nursery, through to Year 6, is designed to excite, motivate and help them develop an innate curiosity for the world around them.

Dedicated sessions take place weekly for all children from Nursery to Year 6, but opportunities to be outdoors occur daily.

These sessions include den building, knot tying, exploring textures and materials, gardening and monitoring seasonal change.

KEY BENEFITS

Exploring the world independently

Our approach to learning in the outdoors is rooted firmly in the key progressive education theorists of the past one hundred and fifty years – from Froebel to Steiner, Vygotsky to Montessori, Dewey to Gardner – all of them put the child at the centre of their own learning. They all valued the importance of children being allowed to explore the world independently, with appropriate support.

Through our emphasis on outdoor learning, Kingscourt School provides a nurturing environment where children develop essential life skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and resilience. By immersing themselves in nature, they learn to adapt, overcome challenges, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.

At Kingscourt School, we believe that by empowering children to explore the world independently, we enable them to become confident, self-directed learners who are equipped to navigate an ever-changing global landscape. Our outdoor adventures instill a lifelong love for learning, paving the way for their future success and fulfillment.

Our mission to create a greener and more sustainable future

At Kingscourt Prep School, we take environmental issues very seriously and have a number of policies in place to reduce our carbon footprint.

Our new Nursery has solar panels as well as consciously sourced materials. Our School council regularly remind us to recycle our paper, with bins in every classroom. We collect and send used batteries for recycling and have assemblies to remind us about plastic reduction. This has included work with a local group, Final Straw Foundation.
